The Woman Card

Being a female in a male dominated world is often riddled with double standards. As I wake up again to the reality that women just aren’t worth much to society, these are all weighing heavily on my mind.

Smile more. Well, we can’t take her seriously because she’s always smiling.

You’d be so much prettier if you wore a little makeup. Why do you wear so much makeup? It makes you look like a whore.

Women are born to be moms. Women really should bear more of the financial responsibilities in the home.

Grow up and get a job and pay your own way. Here’s 70% of your male counterpart’s salary.

Don’t show emotion, it makes you look weak. What a bitch, she never cries.

Show off your legs. Did you see what she was wearing, she totally asked to be raped.

Say no. But, you were drinking.

Be proud of your body! But, lose 10 pounds and you’ll really be pretty.

Have ambition and dream big! She’s too aggressive.

Stay home and be a mom. Why don’t you work? What do you do all day?

You can be a mom and have a career. How could you let someone else raise your child? I could never leave my baby all day.

Your body is your body; no one has the right to touch you without your permission. Grab ’em by the pu$$y.

I could go on and list the millions of other double standards and contradictions we face daily, but instead I’m going to do my duty as a mother and a woman to stand up, speak up and be the change. My son will grow up surrounded by strong women and he will learn to respect women and men. I owe this to your daughters and I owe this to the memory of the little girl and young woman I once was.
